"Serve 2.0" – Social Media for Service-Learning

"Serve 2.0" is much like Web 2.0, a dynamic and collaborative web presence that involves such social media tools as Facebook, YouTube, Ning, Delicious social bookmarking, and Twitter. Stetson University's Center for Service-Learning has incorporated "Serve 2.0" throughout all of its programs and would like to share its benefits with university, city, and statewide partners. This FL|CC Day Institute will emphasize the empowerment of community partners from across the state of Florida so as to enhance their effectiveness and productivity through more effective marketing and volunteer management strategies. "It Matters!" – Implementing Service-Learning

The "It Matters!" FL|CC Day Institute will serve as an introduction to service-learning for faculty, community and business leaders, and students. It will provide the foundation for the implementation of college-wide service-learning initiatives and the development of campus-community partnerships. Broward College has designed the "It Matters!" service-learning community engagement project to address four themes associated with the current economic recovery needs of the community: "Education Matters!", "Money Matters!", "Health Matters!", and "Career Matters!".

"Engaged Scholarship and Community Redevelopment" – Campus and Community Partnership Building

The University of South Florida is hosting "Community Redevelopment", a FL|CC Day Institute that will provide faculty and community partners with information and experience in the key components of building sustainable, reciprocal partnerships in service-learning courses. The institute will feature lessons learned and examples from East Tampa and other long-term community-engaged projects. The Institute will focus primarily, but not exclusively, on partnerships between institutions of higher education and Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRA) which are carried out through service-learning. The format will be participatory, including panel discussions and in-depth, practical workshops for faculty and practitioners.

"Livin' La Vida Local" – Hands-On Local Engagement for Global Understanding

Florida Gulf Coast University will present a FL|CC Day Institute that incorporates the "think globally, act locally" philosophy. This concentrates on effective service-learning experiences developed in conjunction with community partners. The Institute is designed to share experiences and increase knowledge, skills, and relationships instrumental in the evolution of colleges and universities into institutions dedicated to the civic health of their communities. The full integration of service across colleges, consideration of engaged scholarship in the faculty promotion process, and the reinforcement of community partnership development will be promoted. The Institute will not only attract participants from other campuses but assist in building bridges for joint service/engaged scholarship endeavors in the future.

"Freshman to Senior" – Service-Learning to Engage All Undergrads

"Freshman to Senior" will explore the importance of service-learning across the undergraduate experience. While service-learning can provide meaningful academic and social impacts, the nature of these experiences varies across the duration of a student's academic career. This FL|CC Day Institute will explore how service-learning can be introduced to new students, including beneficial strategies for introducing service-learning via orientation and the impact of service through first year experience courses. Further, it will engage attendees with ideas on expanding students' academic knowledge during the mid-years of their academic careers and connecting these students to the community.

"Building Sustainable Communities" – The Environmental, Social, and Economic Pillars of Sustainability

The Florida A&M University School of Architecture (SOA) will host a FL|CC Day Institute that will advance engaged scholarship. Faculty, administrators, students, and community and business leaders will come together to explore cross-disciplinary service-learning practices, opportunities, and partnerships. Participants will discuss the social, economic, and environmental concerns of sustainability and the role of faculty, community partners, and students in developing service conscious academic programs and community partnerships. The FL|CC Day Institute will identify opportunities to expand cross disciplinary scholarship within the mission of higher education.
